The Rucksack House Addition

5 03 2008

The Rucksack House addition located in Germany is a simple, yet innovative way to add additional space to an existing residential building. The design team known as, Convertible City, came up with the idea to suspend a semi-glass box on the side of a building to add space and create a very suspenseful piece of sculpture for the community.
Perched between art and architecture, form and function, the Rucksack House is a walk-in sculpture with its own spatial quality. A hovering illuminated space that looks like a cross between temporary scaffolding and minimal sculpture. As mobile as a rucksack, this mini-house is intended to be an additional room that can be suspended from the façade of any residential building.

This design shows that something as simple as hanging a box on the side of the building takes just as much consideration and detail as a large project. Be sure to check out the this project and the rest of their innovative work on their team’s webpage.
